Test Structure
TOPIK is divided into two separate tests. You choose which one to take based on your level:
TOPIK I (Beginner)
For beginners. Covers levels 1급 and 2급.
Test Sections:
- 듣기 (Listening) - 40 minutes, 30 questions
- 읽기 (Reading) - 60 minutes, 40 questions
Note: No writing section for TOPIK I

Study Strategies That Work
Use Official Past Papers
Free past TOPIK exams are available on the official website. Do at least 5-10 full practice tests before your exam. The format doesn't change much.
Practice Under Time Pressure
The biggest killer is time management. Always practice with a timer. Many people fail simply because they can't finish.
Don't Neglect Writing (TOPIK II)
The essay section is worth 50% of the writing score. Practice the specific essay formats required. There are scoring rubrics you should study.

"Which level should I take first?"
If you've studied Korean for less than 6 months or are unsure, take TOPIK I. There's no penalty for starting low, and the confidence boost from passing helps motivation.
"Can I skip levels?"
Sort of. You can go directly to TOPIK II even as a beginner, but you'll get a lower score. Since TOPIK I only covers 1-2급, advanced learners skip it entirely.
"Do I need TOPIK to study in Korea?"
For Korean-taught programs, yes. Most universities require TOPIK 3급 or higher. For English-taught programs, it's usually not required but helps with daily life and scholarships.
"How do I register?"

"What if I fail?"

"Is there an online/at-home TOPIK?"
Not for the main TOPIK test—it must be taken in person at authorized test centers. However, TOPIK IBT (computer-based) is being piloted in some locations. The separate TOPIK Speaking test is also computer-based.
"What's TOPIK Speaking?"
TOPIK Speaking is a separate, computer-based speaking test introduced in 2023. It's not required by most institutions yet, but may become more important for immigration and certain jobs. It's held separately from the main TOPIK test.
