Answer Key and Explanations
1. 日 = day / sun
In 日本 it is read に, and in 日曜日 it appears twice with different readings.
2. 人 = person
人 is essential for words like 日本人 and 三人.
3. 学校 = school
学 means study/learning and 校 appears in school-related words.
4. 先生 = teacher
先生 literally combines before/previous and life/birth, but as a word means teacher.
5. 食べる = to eat
This is a core N5 verb and a useful kanji to recognize early.
6. 日本 = にほん / にっぽん, Japan
にほん is the most common beginner reading.
7. 一月 = いちがつ, January
Months use number + 月, read がつ for month names.
8. 三人 = さんにん, three people
人 is read にん in most counted-person words, except 一人 and 二人.
9. 水曜日 = すいようび, Wednesday
曜日 means day of the week. 水 is water and Wednesday.
10. 見る = みる, to see/watch
A core Group 2 verb and one of the earliest kanji verbs to learn.

Common Mistakes
Only memorizing meanings
Kanji need words. Learn 日 through 日本, 今日, 日曜日, and 一日.
Ignoring counters
N5 loves numbers with counters. Practice 一人, 二人, 三人 and dates early.
Learning too many kanji
Do not jump to 500 kanji. Master the first 100 with readings and words first.
