Answer Key and Explanations
1. ねこ = neko, cat
ね is ne and こ is ko. This is a good word for practicing the N and K rows.
2. みず = mizu, water
み is mi and ず is zu. The dakuten turns す into ず.
3. あした = ashita, tomorrow
し is pronounced shi, not si. This is one of the first irregular romaji readings to memorize.
4. ともだち = tomodachi, friend
だ uses dakuten on た, changing ta into da. ち is chi.
5. すみません = sumimasen, excuse me / sorry
ん is the standalone n sound. Do not add a vowel after it.
6. asa = あさ
あ is a and さ is sa.
7. inu = いぬ
い is i and ぬ is nu.
8. sushi = すし
す is su and し is shi.
9. yasai = やさい
や is ya, さ is sa, and い is i.
10. arigatou = ありがとう
This common spelling uses あ-り-が-と-う. The final う lengthens the o sound.

Common Mistakes
Reading too slowly
If each word takes more than a few seconds, go back to row drills before adding more vocabulary.
Depending on romaji
Hide romaji as soon as possible. Romaji is a bridge, not the destination.
Skipping dakuten
Practice pairs like か/が, さ/ざ, and た/だ side by side until the marks feel automatic.
