Answer Key and Explanations
1. 가 = ga
ㄱ plus ㅏ makes 가. This is the simplest consonant-vowel block pattern.
2. 물 = mul, water
ㅁ + ㅜ + ㄹ forms a CVC block with ㄹ at the bottom.
3. 밥 = bap, rice/meal
The final ㅂ is pronounced with a closed p-like ending.
4. 학교 = hakgyo, school
학 has a final ㄱ, and 교 combines ㄱ with ㅛ.
5. 한국 = hanguk, Korea
한 + 국 is the Korean word for Korea.
6. ㅎ + ㅏ + ㄴ = 한
The final consonant ㄴ sits at the bottom of the block.
7. ㄱ + ㅜ + ㄱ = 국
Horizontal vowel ㅜ goes under the first consonant.
8. ㅁ + ㅜ + ㄹ = 물
This is the word for water, one of the best first reading words.
9. ㅂ + ㅏ + ㅂ = 밥
The vowel ㅏ goes to the right of ㅂ, final ㅂ goes below.
10. ㅅ + ㅓ + ㄴ = 선
ㅓ is a vertical vowel, so it sits to the right of ㅅ.

Common Mistakes
Reading letters separately
Hangul is read in syllable blocks. Train your eye to read 한 as one unit, not three disconnected letters.
Ignoring final consonants
Final consonants change pronunciation and meaning. Always check the bottom of the block.
Relying on romanization
Use romanization only to check yourself. The real goal is reading Korean text directly.
